"The Successor", 2020
Ielizaveta PortnovaThrough this work, Ielizaveta Portnova gives substance to her vision of ceramics and its evolution in history: from the archaic form of the vase to anthropomorphic sculpture (or sculpture as an artistic genre). “The successor” reminds us of its origins, those of the Neolithic vase.
On the creative process:
" I started by making small vases as they were produced in the Neolithic period with the difference in material - mine are made of porcelain and were modeled on a potter's wheel. The process of creating this work is a form of dialogue between the archaic form and modern technology, a bridge between a distant past and a more recent past. I then reduced these small vases to debris before incorporating them into the mass of the final form.
